Brick calculator
Number of bricks, mortar, cement and sand for a wall.
How it is calculated
Wall volume = (length × height − openings) × thickness. Bricks = wall volume ÷ volume of one brick with mortar joints, plus wastage. Mortar (wet) = wall volume − bricks × brick volume. Dry mortar = wet × 1.33. Cement and sand from the mix ratio.
Check locally: Brick sizes, joint thickness and mix differ by region; choose or edit them.
How to use the Brick Calculator
Estimate the number of bricks for a wall, and the mortar, cement and sand to lay them, for Indian, UK and US brick sizes or any custom size.
- Enter the wall length and height, and the area of any doors or windows to leave out.
- Choose the wall thickness: half brick, one brick or a custom thickness.
- Pick the brick size and mortar joint (10 mm is common).
- Choose the mortar mix and wastage, then read the bricks, mortar and cement bags.
Worked example
A 10 m × 3 m half-brick wall in India modular bricks (190 × 90 × 90 mm) with 10 mm joints needs 1,500 bricks, or 1,575 with 5% wastage. That is 50 bricks per square metre of wall. The wet mortar is about 0.69 m³; in a 1:6 mix that needs about 4 bags of cement and 0.79 m³ of sand.
Good to know
- Each brick is counted with its joint, so a thicker joint means fewer bricks and more mortar.
- Add wastage for cutting and breakage: 5% for straightforward walls, more for many openings or reclaimed bricks.
- Check local practice for mortar mixes: 1:4 to 1:6 is common for load-bearing and partition walls.
Questions
How many bricks are in a cubic metre?
About 500 modular 190 × 90 × 90 mm bricks with 10 mm joints. The calculator works it out for any size.
